Please join Hashimoto Contemporary Los Angeles Director Dasha Matsuura as she discusses the Killing the Negative series with poet and educator Quraysh Ali Lansana and draftsman Joel Daniel Phillips, both Tulsa Artist Fellowship 2021 Arts Integration Awardees. In addition to a discussion about their collaboration, Lansana will be reading several of his own poems as well as works by U.S. Poet Laureate Joy Harjo, Rose McLarney and Candace Wiley in response to Phillips’ drawings currently on view in the Hashimoto Contemporary Los Angeles gallery from October 9-30.
Elaborating on Killing the Negative series, Phillips solo exhibition will include his signature graphite drawings and a selection of oil paintings. Grappling with power, race, class, and stratified socio-economic issues, the ongoing body of work is a meditative response to a selection of Government censored photographs commissioned by the Farm Security Administration (FSA) during the Great Depression.

Joel Daniel Phillips latest body of work highlighting his first publicly available oil paintings. This is Hashimoto Contemporary's inaugural exhibition in Los Angeles and Phillips' debut solo exhibition in Los Angeles.

Quraysh Ali Lansana is an American poet, book editor, civil rights historian, and professor. Lansana is the author of eight books of poetry in addition to textbooks and works for children.
